Project: Avenue for the Arts ArtPosts

The ArtPosts by Avenue for the Arts are a series of outdoor galleries, where artists can display their work for people to view any time of day and for free.

Below you’ll find a map of each ArtPost viewpoint, and a numbered list in which to ideally follow the tour to get the most out of this project. I’ve also included the story of how and why I created this pieces.

To view each sculpture in the order in which they were created to be viewed, start at the GVSU Pew campus, and follow the list in this order:

  1. GVSU Pew Campus: The corner of Mt. Vernon Ave and Front Ave

  2. GVSU Seidman Campus: Across from the main entrance

  3. Fountain Street Church: 24 Fountain St NE

  4. Verne Barry Place: 63 Division Ave S

  5. Ferguson Apartments: Just south of the 52 Sheldon Parking lot LaGrave entrance in the small park.

It isn’t necessary to see them in order, but it does help to see all of the pieces eventually.

The ArtPosts will be showcasing my pieces from June – early September.

Process and Meaning

When I was approached by Zachary Trebellas, Director of AFTA, I was extremely excited for the chance to be involved with a great organization and a fun way to showcase my art.

The idea that came to me was to express my ceramics journey through the stages of a luna moth’s life using the visual evolution of a vase and sculptural elements to display the wild insect. I added quotes illustrating the biggest challenge I face when going through any major life changes during each stage. Each quote is represented by a theme: Discovery, Growth, Rest, Authenticity, and Starting Over.

My hope is that when people view these pieces, they find some personal meaning and connection to the natural world. Mine is that life is short; so I have fun, try to be authentic, and know that I can start over when I need to.
